Polymer clay business

Decorative and applied art is something that many people live or are simply fond of. Creating jewelry, crafts, souvenirs – can serve as just a hobby, and a way to earn money.

Today, one of the most popular materials in decorative art is polymer clay. It is also called plastic, since it is a very flexible soft material that hardens at a certain temperature (usually from 100 to 130 degrees, depending on the manufacturer).

A marathon where you will create passive income live from scratch and find out specific strategies for investing in apartments, houses, garages, cars and even profitable sites
To begin
The main properties of the material

It has a characteristic look and smell. It looks very much like ordinary plasticine. To make it plastic, plasticizers are introduced into its composition. Thanks to them, the material becomes more frost-resistant, better tolerates exposure to light and heat. When the clay is heated to a certain temperature, the plasticizers evaporate and it hardens.

To make it more suitable for decorative arts and crafts, its manufacturers immediately produce painted in various colors.

In addition to “plasticine”, there is also a transparent liquid material. Outwardly, it looks like a gel, which also hardens when heated. Liquid plastic joins various parts made of a polymer material as glue.

The standard composition of the material is a polyvinyl chloride base, one or more plasticizers and the necessary pigment (giving the desired color). Additionally, white porcelain, kaolin, mica can be added.

Do-it-yourself polymer clay
If you are thinking of starting a business for the production of such material, but are not sure whether it is worth it, you can try to start producing it at home. Before starting to engage in serious business – to organize a wide production taking into account all the necessary chemical processes, you need to understand whether this material will be in demand as a product in your city or region.

Any large business starts small, so try to make clay at home, and sell it in small batches.

For home production, slightly different materials are used than for professional ones. Since all the ingredients are readily available, everyone can try to make polymer clay on their own.

You will need: white PVA glue, corn starch, petroleum jelly, low-fat hand cream, lemon juice. You will also need utensils and equipment: a glass bowl (refractory), a plastic spatula, a large spoon for mixing, a plastic film.
Manufacturing technology

White PVA glue (250 g), corn starch (250 g) and petroleum jelly (1 tablespoon) are placed in a glass bowl and mix well. Then add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and mix again. A homogeneous mass should be obtained.
Put the bowl with the resulting mass in the microwave, set the maximum temperature. After 30 seconds, mix the contents of the bowl thoroughly. Then put the bowl in the microwave again for another 30 seconds.

When you remove the bowl from the microwave, you will see a crust formed on the surface. Carefully remove it and discard.
Then put the obtained polymer mass on the surface (for example, a table), having previously lubricated it with a non-greasy hand cream. Use a silicone-free cream.
Knead the mass as you would with a regular dough. Be sure to do this on a greased surface. The mass should be stirred for about five minutes with vigorous and quick movements. With a plastic spatula, scrape off pieces of mass that adhere to the walls of the dishes. As a result of such kneading, a plastic and elastic material will be obtained.
Form the mass, giving it an oblong shape, and lay on a fabric that absorbs residual moisture.
Wait for the material to cool completely, and then wrap it with plastic wrap.
Your clay is completely ready.
Given the specified amount of ingredients, you will receive approximately 350 grams of finished raw materials.

In the future, store the material in the refrigerator by placing it in a plastic dish with a tight-fitting lid. To give clay color, any oil-based paints or food coloring can be used. To achieve uniform distribution of paint throughout the piece of plastic, add it gradually in small portions, stirring thoroughly.

What to do if the polymer mass has lost its flexibility and it is difficult to work with it? You can use one of the methods: add vaseline or cream to it or mix it with a portion of softer polymer clay. If you initially got too liquid and viscous mass, then you can make it elastic by mixing with a portion of drier and more rigid clay.
